A solid dowel pin is a straight, solid-rod mechanical component used for fastening and positioning. Primarily utilized in mechanical assembly, it precisely aligns two or more parts, secures them in predetermined locations, and provides a structural reference point, strength, and stability. Due to their compact size yet significant utility, they are widely used in fields such as precision machinery, automation equipment, mold making, automotive engineering, aerospace, electronic instrumentation, and woodworking.

 

Classification by fit type:

Clearance fit (loose fit): The pin diameter is slightly smaller than the hole diameter, leaving a tiny gap. This allows for easy assembly and disassembly, making it suitable for temporary positioning, frequent removal/installation, or components sensitive to thermal expansion.

Transition fit (medium fit): Tolerances for the pin and hole are balanced, resulting in minimal clearance or interference. This offers a compromise between positioning accuracy and ease of assembly/disassembly, making it ideal for applications like high-precision flange alignment.

Interference fit (tight fit): The pin diameter is slightly larger than the hole diameter, requiring external force (such as press-fitting or thermal assembly) for installation. It provides high retention strength, making it suitable for applications involving heavy loads, intense vibration, or permanent fixation.

Classification by head design: Rounded head (facilitates insertion and lateral sliding), flat head (suitable for space-constrained areas), spherical head (prevents damage to the workpiece), etc.

Classification by shape:

Cylindrical dowel pin: The most common type; it features a cylindrical shape that allows for smooth tool release after installation, making it suitable for standard positioning tasks and scenarios requiring frequent assembly and disassembly.
